Yannis wins First Choice Responsible Tourism Award 2005
Yannis has finally received recognition of his long struggle to keep Gerakas unspoilt by developers keen to cash in on tourism in the area. In November 2005 he and Maddy went to the World Travel Market exhibition in London Docklands to pick up the award.

National Marine Park of Zakynthos - Comeback?
The National Marine Park has been suspended for the last 2 years. In this time, considerable further damage has been done to the nesting beaches and land behind the been: New illegal buildings have been erected, illegal roads improved. Park workers have not been paid so they went on strike.

Damage to Gerakas' Clay Cliffs
In August we were alerted to the fact that tourists visiting Gerakas had suddenly started attacking the cliffs to the west of the beach in a bid to dig out clay for seaside 'spa treatments'.

London Zoo Aquarium
Over Summer 2005 Earth Sea & Sky worked with the aquarium at London Zoo on their Shell Shocked Campaign. 2005 was the Year of the Turtle, and to raise public awareness of their plight all over the world, London Zaoo ran a Leatherback Turtle Tour visiting aquariums across the UK.

Nesting in 2005
Nesting numbers fell this summer throughout Greece. Many factors can affect nesting, such as food supply, but in this case, it was felt that the weather was to blame. In Zakynthos the sea temperature was cooler than normal at the start of the season, which meant turtles were slow to start mating and the females to start laying.
